The Tipping Point

I found The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference on the shelf at my in laws. Since my husband claims it was his copy of the book that he purchased for a college course I felt no qualms about stealing it (they would've given it to me anyway. We're pretty free with the exchange of books). I know this is not a book on the 1001 list. It by definition cannot be, since it is not a novel.

However, I found it entertaining enough to merit a small digression from my reading list. At times it felt like an essay that was forced to stretch to book form. Thus it did not surprise me to see the author say that it was originally a short piece published in the The New Yorker. Luckily all the stretching was done by adding interesting real life examples and stories. Many of us are familiar with the six degrees of separation theory, but how many of us knew how Sesame Street and Blues Clues were created?

I also enjoyed picking out the people in my life who fit the descriptions laid out in the book. I definitely know some Mavens who walk around with their copies of consumer reports and will regale you with tales of price cuts and stockpiling items purchased on sale. One of them happens to be my husband. We never have less than 12 rolls of toilet paper in our tiny apartment each purchased at an incredibly low price. Nothing beats reading a paragraph out of a book out loud to your spouse and seeing him marvel at how well he is described.

I'd give this one a 4 out of 5 stars.
